Школьные учителя Иссык-Кульской области обучились методике образования для устойчивого развития и сохранения биоразнообразия

School teachers in the Issyk-Kul region have been trained in educational methods for sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity

19 December 2023

The training was organized by the PF "CAMP Alatoo" for 43 geography and biology teachers from schools in the villages of Bokonbayevo and Saruu-Ton districts, which are part of the pilot project area for adapting mammals to climate change.

The workshops aimed to raise community awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation, adaptation measures to climate change, and the development of teaching skills among educators to promote sustainable development.

The program consisted of sequential sessions during which participants received information and applied their knowledge in practice. Through this approach, teachers simultaneously mastered the principles of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and reinforced them through improvised lessons on natural resources and biodiversity.

The first day of training focused on the concept of sustainable development and its goals. In a playful manner, teachers determined the balance between "environment," "society," and "economy." They concluded that natural resources often lose their priority due to an imbalance toward economic interests. Participants drew a comparison with livestock grazing, emphasizing the need to consider ecological aspects. Teachers expressed their views, stating, "Animals graze in one pasture for a long time. As a result, the resource is depleted. But grazing livestock is necessary because it provides livelihoods and food for the owners. Therefore, shepherds drive the livestock higher into the mountains, where wild animals live, losing not only their habitat but also their feeding base."

In the next part of the training, participants learned new didactic teaching methods that would help improve their work and overall educational quality. Through various exercises, they identified the best ways to present educational material. Group work focused on developing various teaching methods (quizzes, case studies, role-playing, etc.) and the teaching methodology of the topic "Ecosystem Services of the Forest for Humans and the Environment." A detailed lesson plan on forest services is described in the manual "Education for Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Conservation," which teachers became acquainted with on the second day of training. With the guidance of trainers, they conducted the exercise "Sustainable Forest Management in Kyrgyzstan" and discussed resource management functions and approaches, as well as their role in human livelihoods. A role-playing game allowed participants to convey key messages on resolving controversial situations that arise between consumers of ecosystem services.

As support and motivation to apply the new methodology and knowledge in their teaching activities, all participants received the manual "Education for Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Conservation" and visual materials.

The training was conducted by master trainer of the "Education for Sustainable Development" course Gulmira Shamkanova and eco-education specialist of the PF "CAMP Alatoo" Dina Maldybaeva.

The training was organized and conducted as part of the regional project "Adaptation of Migrating Animal Species to Climate Change," which is carried out by the PF "CAMP Alatoo" with the support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).Начало формы
