The CAMCA in Central Asia Approaches Completion: Partners Reviewed Results

15 September 2025

Since 2022, the CAMP Alatoo PF has been implementing the regional project “Enhancing the Conservation of Flagship Migratory Mammal Species of Central Asia through Climate Change-Informed Management and Decision” (CAMCA). By the end of 2025, this initiative, covering the wildlife of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan, will come to an end. Preliminary outcomes, as well as results for 2024–2025, were discussed by partners at the 4th working meeting held in Dushanbe on September 8–11, 2025.

The event brought together representatives of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), ACBK (Kazakhstan), CAMP Alatoo PF and Ilbirs Foundation (Kyrgyzstan), CAMP Tabiat and TNF (Tajikistan), as well as GRID-Arendal, CMS, WWF, and other partners. During plenary sessions and thematic group work, teams presented reports for the past two years, agreed on the remaining steps, and allocated responsibilities for final tasks. The structure and content of the final conference, to be held in Bishkek in October, were also developed, along with the communication strategy and options for scaling key project outcomes.

For CAMP Alatoo PF, this stage has been particularly productive. Together with the Biodiversity Conservation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Kyrgyzstan, scientists from the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan, and researchers from Humboldt University (Germany), the foundation worked on creating the Ak-Ilbirs Ecological Corridor — a vital link connecting protected areas of Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions to ensure safe movement of migratory animals and preserve their populations. Adaptation measures were introduced in the project area to protect fauna and enhance species’ resilience to climate change. Specialists also studied and tested new field tools for pasture monitoring and protected area management, which are already in practical use.

Special attention was given to working with communities: pasture management plans were developed together with local residents, taking into account the needs of both domestic and wild animals, setting grazing rules and measures to reduce conflicts over forage resources. Environmental education also continued, ensuring that knowledge on nature conservation is available and applicable at the local level.

The second part of the meeting took place in the Tigrovaya Balka Reserve, where participants learned about protection measures implemented by rangers and scientific staff, met with communities, and discussed practices of co-management, ecotourism development, and ways of disseminating successful experiences.

As a result, detailed plans for completing project activities were outlined, and the results and directions to be integrated into national and regional strategies were discussed.

The CAMCA project is implemented with the support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
