In 2023-2024, the PF “СAMР Alatoo” supported five projects aimed at improving pasture infrastructure in the Naryn region. Through mini-grants provided by the project “Kyrgyzstan Pastures and Natural Resources Management”, implemented with the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service, members of the pasture committees from Jergetal Ayil Aimak and staff from the Naryn and At-Bashy forestry enterprises developed their initiatives.
Climate change has complicated effective pasture management in the region, with increasing droughts causing irrigation water shortages and challenges in forage preparation. These issues formed the basis of project proposals developed by local communities and forestry enterprises after completing specialized training. All initiatives focused on ensuring sustainable water supply and improving the forage base.
In Jergetal Ayil Aimak, a discharge structure called "Kazankuygan" was constructed on the local river, along with the installation of three water distribution devices equipped with gates and a tubular crossing. This enabled irrigation of 300 hectares of land, reducing water loss and mitigating conflicts over resource access.
In the village of Zhalgyz-Terek, repairs to the aqueduct in the Shorgo-Noo section involved leveling the water conduit, reinforcing concrete supports, and clearing pipes of silt. These measures allowed for the irrigation of fields covering a total area of 500 hectares, significantly improving water use efficiency.
In the Raimbai-Chunkur section of the Naryn forestry enterprise, water was supplied over a two-kilometer distance from the source. The enclosed 4-hectare area is now used for hay cultivation, with plans to grow additional crops in the future.
In the At-Bashy forestry enterprise, a 2-hectare section of the Besh-Belchir pasture was fenced off to create a hayfield. The harvested hay is sold to local shepherds at an affordable price. Last year, a similar plot yielded 280 bales of hay, generating 28,000 soms in revenue.
The pasture committee of Jergetal Ayil Aimak allocated 2 hectares for establishing a tree plantation in line with Kyrgyz Government Resolution No. 735, which allows pastures to be used for greening and irrigation purposes. The area was fenced to protect it from livestock, and in the spring of 2025, plans are in place to plant fruit and ornamental trees, with irrigation provided by a nearby water source 800 meters away.
The implemented mini-projects have demonstrated that the combined efforts of local communities, forestry enterprises, and partners such as the PF “СAMР Alatoo” and the U.S. Forest Service can effectively address the challenges of pasture management. These initiatives provide residents with access to water, enhance land productivity, and strengthen the region’s environmental resilience.
