Adaptation to climate change

Environmental education

CAMP Alatoo's Environmental Education program aims to raise awareness on environmental challenges, promote sustainable way of thinking, responsible behaviour, develop practical skills to protect and conserve the environment and improve the quality of life. We educate future and current managers and users of natural resources with accessible and simple approaches and tools to ensure a sustainable future and conservation of the environment. The learning materials offered are based on the use of a variety of didactic materials, simulation games and digital tools, experiments and citizen science investigations that encourage students to develop critical and systematic thinking skills and to adopt sustainable practices.

Climate change is a well-known phenomenon, including the local level, but its causes, processes and impacts on the natural resources and biodiversity are not always clearly understood. Often climate change is the declared cause of land degradation, while unsustainable land use practices may be the main driver. Environmental education on climate change aims to raise awareness and knowledge among local communities on causes of climate change, its impacts on the local environment, adaptation and mitigation measures that can be taken at the community level.

      Approaches:

  • Citizen science - involving citizens: students, farmers, teachers and local governments in collecting climate, phenological and other data, analysing and interpreting them and providing information for local decision-making.
  • Raising environmental awareness and consciousness of local communities on climate change and its impacts, assessing the current levels of awareness of climate change, identifying existing adaptation and mitigation practices in the field of natural resource management and biodiversity conservation.

Tools:

  • Jointly identifying topics for training materials and developing them in response to community needs.
  • Approving developed materials with relevant education authorities for use and inclusion in school programmes.
  • Conducting school-based research on climate and environmental parameters for awareness raising and local decision making.
  • Holding public exhibitions on the results of school research.
  • Social research on climate change, climate risks and vulnerability including needs assessment, KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices).
  • Information campaigns: thematic trainings, festivals, summer environmental schools, creation of short films, exhibitions, environmental actions, master classes, etc.
