The Sarychat-Eertash and Khan-Tengri state nature reserves have updated their operational management plans. This process was facilitated through a series of training sessions organized by CAMP Alatoo PF, involving both protected area staff and residents from the villages of Ak-Terek, Boz-Uchuk, and Bokonbaevo.
The workshops focused on participatory planning, which ensures that local communities are actively involved in making decisions about territorial development. This approach balances conservation goals with the actual needs of people living near protected zones.
During the sessions, participants updated development plans and examined the concept of OECMs (Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures). The practical component included resource mapping and situational analysis, where participants identified high-value natural areas, discussed existing risks, and sought ways to mitigate them.
A dedicated session was held on OECM territories. These are areas where nature conservation is maintained not just through official status, but through the sustainable practices of the communities themselves. This model helps protect ecosystems and pastures while fostering eco-friendly activities, such as ecotourism.
The discussions also addressed key governance issues, including legal frameworks, resource user interaction, and conflict prevention. Participants worked toward consensus-based solutions and a shared vision for preserving the region's biodiversity.
The trainings were conducted as part of the "One Health in Nature Conservation" project, implemented by CAMP Alatoo PF with the support of the IKI and IUCN.
