Pasture Management Plans Updated in Naryn Region

05 April 2026

With the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new grazing season, agricultural regions across the country are entering a critical period for developing land resource management plans. In response, specialists from the CAMP Alatoo PF supported communities in the Naryn region by conducting a series of training seminars focused on updating these strategic documents.

The events were attended by over 100 participants, including representatives of municipal enterprises, farmers, and resource users from the Uch-Kun, Kara-Suu, Kazybek, Baetov, Kara-Burgon, and Togolok Moldo rural municipalities (aiyl aimaks). These areas serve as pilot territories for the GEF- UNDP project, " “Integrated community-based management of high value mountain ecosystems in southern Kyrgyzstan for multiple benefits”.

The primary objective of the training was to introduce sustainable land-use approaches and strengthen the capacity of local specialists in land management, monitoring, and the selection of pasture infrastructure project proposals, while actively involving women in decision-making processes.

During the sessions, trainers and participants focused specifically on digitalization and modern monitoring methods, particularly the use of maps developed through remote sensing of the Earth using the NDVI index. Utilizing 2025 yield data, participants were able to calculate the actual carrying capacity of each pasture plot with high precision and proceed to the practical planning stage. This work included the verification of shepherd lists and livestock numbers, which formed the foundation for the updated Pasture Management Plans.

The planning process also required adaptation to the new realities of the Administrative-Territorial Reform (ATR). Under these conditions, CAMP Alatoo PF experts helped establish efficient data exchange between villages within the recently merged municipalities.

Despite the intensive schedule, the seminars proved highly productive. Upon completion of the training, municipal enterprises received detailed maps that will serve as effective tools for preventing overgrazing and protecting land from degradation.
