Workshops on Climate-Resilient Pasture Management Held in Batken Region

02 March 2026

In the first half of February 2026, experts from the PF "CAMP Alatoo" conducted a series of three-day training workshops in the Kadamjay district of the Batken region. The events covered three aiyl aimaks (rural municipalities): Orozbekov, Maidansky, and Uch-Korgon. The training focused on updating pasture management plans to account for climate risks.

More than 60 participants took part in the workshops, including representatives from local government bodies, district agricultural development departments, veterinarians, land use specialists, as well as farmers and herders. Women accounted for over 30% of the total attendees.

The training process was designed in an interactive format and included three key stages. In the first stage, participants studied the legal and regulatory framework, conducted an inventory of livestock numbers, and assessed the condition of pasture lands (area, productivity, seasonal use). Next, they analyzed the forage balance, soil degradation, and access restrictions to remote areas caused by damaged infrastructure. Finally, seasonal grazing rotation schedules and pasture allocation schemes were developed to reduce pressure on the soil.

Special attention was paid to working with climate data. Participants were presented with forecasts indicating the following changes for the target territories: (1) rising air temperatures (especially in summer) and more frequent heatwaves; and (2) a shift in precipitation toward spring, accompanied by increased intensity.

To understand how climate change would affect local communities, a vulnerability scoring system developed by PF “CAMP Alatoo” was used. Each measure proposed by participants was assessed against sustainability indicators. The measures that best met these criteria were selected for further support through small grants. In total, participants prepared 33 project proposals aimed at restoring and installing watering points, repairing roads and bridges, building protective structures, and enhancing pasture resilience to degradation. These proposals will serve as a basis for mobilizing funding and will be incorporated into the budget plans of local government bodies.

The training sessions were held as part of the project "Strengthening Pasture Management and Enhancing Climate Resilience in the Isfayram-Say and Shakhimardan River Basins," with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
