In July, specialists from the “СAMР Alatoo” Public Foundation participated in the International Seminar on Protected Area Management (ISPAM). This event was organized by the International Program of the U.S. Forest Service in collaboration with the University of Montana and took place in Missoula. The annual training brought together around 20 specialists from Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Representatives from Kyrgyzstan and Georgia attended on behalf of the CIS countries.
The seminar provided participants with up-to-date knowledge and skills in the management of protected areas. During the training, the specialists analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of various planning models to determine resource protection potential and ensure the fair and sustainable distribution of benefits. They also studied methods of involving local communities in protected area management, including utilizing local knowledge, analyzing stakeholder interests, and assessing land use practices from a sustainability perspective.
Particular attention was given to transboundary management issues such as climate change, wildfires, and wildlife management. Participants discussed contemporary challenges and developed strategies for the effective management of protected areas in an evolving environment.
In addition to the educational component, participants visited national forests and Glacier National Park in Montana, as well as Native American reservations. In Washington, they met with representatives of the U.S. Forest Service's international programs to discuss strategies for managing urban protected areas.
