СAMР Alatoo РF Specialists Participate in IPBES Seminar in Central Asia

11 March 2026

In early March 2026, specialists from the СAMР Alatoo РF took part in the regional seminar “Operationalizing IPBES Assessments in Practice: Barriers and Solutions”, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event brought together around 25 experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan, including representatives of scientific institutions, environmental NGOs, and the regional expert community. The seminar was organized with support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation of Germany, as well as the Institute for Biodiversity Network (ibn).

The seminar focused on the practical application of IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) assessments—an international scientific platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services. IPBES unites scientists, experts, and government representatives to analyze the state of biodiversity and ecosystems, assess environmental risks, and provide evidence-based recommendations for sustainable natural resource management. Its assessments support countries in developing strategies for biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable use of natural resources.

The main objective of the seminar was not only to present IPBES assessment results but also to discuss how these insights can be applied in practice. Participants examined barriers that hinder the integration of scientific recommendations into national strategies and plans, and explored potential solutions based on experiences from across the region.

The three-day program included discussions on the NEXUS approach and its significance for sustainable natural resource management. This approach considers the interconnections between biodiversity, water, food, climate, and health, helping to identify integrated solutions that account for the impacts of these sectors on one another.

During the seminar, participants worked in groups to explore how the NEXUS approach can be applied in national strategies and programs, shared experiences, and discussed opportunities for regional cooperation. Dedicated sessions focused on developing financially sound project proposals and effectively communicating environmental initiatives.

As part of the discussions, СAMР Alatoo РF specialists also shared their experience in regional expert collaboration and presented the GREEN CA network—a regional network of environmental experts in Central Asia co-founded by the Foundation. The network unites organizations and independent specialists from the region working in sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, and the development of a green economy. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, dissemination of best practices, and preparation of expert recommendations for regional and national decision-making processes.

The program also included a field visit to the Botanical Garden and informal networking sessions, which allowed participants to establish professional contacts and strengthen regional cooperation.

By the end of the seminar, participants had discussed both individual and institutional barriers to the implementation of IPBES assessments and received practical tools to apply scientific recommendations in their work and national environmental initiatives.
