Experts from the PF “CAMP Alatoo” have been trained in climate risk assessment methods for three river basins

Specialists from the PF “CAMP Alatoo” participated in a seminar on climate risk assessment for three river basins: Shahimardan, Isfayram-Sai, and Chon-Kemin.The event, held today in Bishkek, was attended by representatives of state environmental protection agencies, water resource management, emergency situations, Kyrgyzhydromet, university experts, and NGOs.

As stated in the press release, the purpose of the meeting was to develop a coordinated strategy for conducting future assessments within the selected basins in Kyrgyzstan.

This work is part of a large-scale study in Central Asian countries for five transboundary river basins. Based on this, measures will be proposed to mitigate the consequences of climate change for each of them: Isfayram-Sai in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Shahimardan in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Zeravshan in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Murgab in Turkmenistan, and Chon-Kemin / Chu River in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. When selecting, factors such as size, presence of water-related emergencies, access to hydrological and meteorological stations were taken into account. All these basins also experience relatively high water stress.

The study and seminar are part of the program "Managing Climate Risks in Central Asia," implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ). Similar meetings are planned for April and May in Taraz (Kazakhstan), Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), Penjikent (Tajikistan), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan).

In addition to analytical materials and partial implementation of proposed measures, the research will involve the training of climate risk assessment instructors in each country.

Background

As temperatures rise, Central Asia continues to experience changes in precipitation patterns, glacier melting, and the filling of moraine lakes, leading to increased risks of droughts, landslides, and floods. These phenomena have no borders, necessitating regional systems and efforts that take into account the interdependence and transboundary nature of natural disasters and climate risks.

The regional program "Managing Climate Risks in Central Asia" supports the governments of Central Asian countries in their cooperation and work on coordinating response measures. This includes facilitating knowledge exchange platforms, capacity-building activities, efforts to establish a regional early warning network for hydrological disasters, as well as climate risk assessments in five selected basins, which was the focus of the seminar on April 15 in Bishkek.

Climate risks are potential negative consequences for people and nature, such as threats to health, life, economy, and ecosystems due to climate change. These include both direct and indirect impacts of extreme weather events and slow climate changes. Unlike simple descriptions of consequences, climate risk assessment describes how and why specific events can affect ecological and social systems. The main idea is to identify key factors and understand how to manage or mitigate them.
