CAMP Alatoo PF organized a working meeting featuring representatives from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Areas (DBCPA) under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic. The meeting presented the results of a political, legal, and institutional analysis regarding the potential for implementing the OECM concept in the Kyrgyz Republic.
OECM (Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures) are territories that are not traditional PA but ensure the effective, long-term conservation of biodiversity. Implementing this mechanism is a key step toward achieving the global "30x30" goal, which aims to protect 30% of the Earth's land by 2030.
Legal expert Arstan Kadyrov presented an analytical report reviewing current legislation. His presentation focused on: (1) Analyzing the compliance of Kyrgyzstan’s regulatory framework with international OECM criteria; (2) Identifying types of land that could be recognized as OECM; (3) Developing a management framework involving both government agencies and local communities.
Following the presentation, participants engaged in a lively discussion about the opportunities and risks associated with the new concept. CAMP Alatoo PF experts emphasized that utilizing OECM would allow Kyrgyzstan not only to meet international obligations but also to strengthen landscape resilience against zoonotic diseases under the "One Health" approach.
The meeting was held as part of the IKI IUCN project, "One Health in Conservation – Strengthening Landscape Resilience to Zoonoses by Consolidating Nature Conservation Systems in Central Asia."
