Local communities in the rural areas (aiyl aimaks) of Osh, Batken, and Naryn regions have begun practical implementation of initiatives aimed at improving pasture infrastructure. Construction works are being carried out within the framework of the GEF/UNDP project "Integrated community-based management of high value mountain ecosystems in southern Kyrgyzstan for multiple benefits," implemented by the "CAMP Alatoo" PF.
This phase was preceded by a series of training sessions on developing and updating pasture management plans. During discussions, resource users concluded that pastures degrade not only due to increasing livestock numbers and grazing pressure, but also due to the lack of basic infrastructure — such as handling chutes, fencing, watering points, and bridges.
To address this issue, the project invited local communities to develop their own mini-project proposals. Out of 38 applications prepared by residents across 13 rural areas, 15 proposals were selected for support. To realize these initiatives, the project has already purchased and delivered the necessary construction materials to the sites.
Today, "CAMP Alatoo" PF specialists are receiving the first photo and video reports from the regions, where construction is either actively underway or already complete.
At the Kara-Talaa pasture area belonging to Terek village in the Baetov rural area, a livestock handling chute (chute-corral) has been constructed. It is designed for microchipping, vaccination, and veterinary inspection of cattle before they are driven to pastures.
"The main goal of this facility is to establish precise livestock tracking and ensure the timely execution of all veterinary procedures," noted Toktomush Kojoev, head of Terek village. He emphasized that the successful launch of the handling chute resulted from the coordinated efforts of local residents, the local government, and the "CAMP Alatoo" PF team.
In Sary-Bee village of the Oytal rural area in Osh region, local residents installed 1,200 meters of protective fencing. Due to uncontrolled grazing, nearby lands designated for agricultural use had become severely depleted.
Installing the fence blocked livestock access, allowing the soil an opportunity to recover. According to experts, this solution will significantly reduce pressure on village-adjacent pastures, redirecting livestock to high-altitude pastures.
Construction works on the remaining sites are ongoing. We will continue to monitor project progress and share new updates.
