Natural Resources of Kyrgyzstan: 2024 Outcomes

09 January 2025

In 2024, Kyrgyzstan made significant strides in sustainable natural resource management, focusing on pasture improvement, forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation.

Key Initiatives

The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic approved several long-term projects and programs, supported by international donors.

In August 2024, the Pasture Development Program for 2024–2029 was adopted. Its goal is to preserve and enhance pastures amid climate change and improve rural livelihoods through effective resource management. The program's main directions include: (1) improving pasture management and utilization; (2) restoring pasture infrastructure; (3) increasing pasture productivity; (4) adapting pastures to climate change; (5)training personnel and updating professional skills; (5) providing scientific, informational, and consultative support.

The program will be implemented in two phases. The first phase (2024–2026) focuses on establishing a legal framework, improving pasture conditions, conducting monitoring, and training specialists. The second phase (2027–2029) emphasizes introducing modern technologies and scientific methods for pasture enhancement, climate adaptation, and continued education for local government officials and resource users. Notably, the United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, highlighting the importance of Kyrgyzstan's efforts.

The PF "CAMP Alatoo" aligns its projects with state program priorities. In 2024, it continued work on restoring and constructing bridges, roads, and watering points. Activities also included improving pasture conditions through seed development and rotational grazing practices. Additionally, "SAMR Alatoo" trained pasture management specialists and collaborated with scientific organizations to develop modern methodologies and technologies.

Regarding forest resources, PF "CAMP Alatoo" partnered with the Kyrgyz Republic's Forest Service in a nationwide forest restoration project initiated last year. Efforts involved identifying areas for afforestation and reforestation. Amendments to the Forest Code strengthened forest and protected area conservation, and a project for sustainable landscape restoration and climate adaptation was launched.

In 2024, foreign financing of $45 million was approved to support sustainable landscape management and climate adaptation in Kyrgyzstan. This project aims to restore degraded lands, improve water resources, and enhance ecosystem resilience to climate change.

Furthermore, a new Green Economy Development Program until 2028 was developed in 2024, focusing on promoting environmentally oriented businesses and increasing social engagement in environmental protection. The program seeks to stimulate sustainable economic growth, create "green" jobs, and raise public awareness about environmental conservation.

Thus, 2024 marked a significant phase in Kyrgyzstan's environmental initiatives aimed at sustainable natural resource management, ecosystem restoration, and climate change adaptation. Continuing these efforts will contribute to the republic's ecological well-being and sustainable development.
