In early May, in the Bazar-Korgon district of the Jalal-Abad region, the pasture season began. Before grazing commenced, specialists from PF “СAMP Alatoo”, together with local farmers and shepherds, conducted an assessment of the condition of sheep in three selected farms, which will help determine the impact of grazing on different pastures on the condition of the animals.
As Talant Toktosunov, a project specialist at PF “СAMP Alatoo”, explained, the selected groups of sheep, totaling 25 heads, were weighed on special electronic scales, and their fat and muscle mass were determined using the BCS (body condition score of sheep) methodology.
"As part of our experiment, one group of sheep will graze on nearby pasture areas, while the other two will be sent to distant pastures. In one of the farms, crossbred sheep, obtained from the Gissar breed, are raised, which will also allow us to compare them with local non-pedigree sheep in terms of criteria such as live weight, growth, development, and condition. After the end of the grazing season, we will conduct a re-weighing and compare the results. We want to determine the degree of influence of grazing on the productivity of sheep in different pasture conditions. This information will help farmers plan cattle grazing correctly," Talant Toktosunov said.
The condition of local pastures at the end of the season will be determined by another comparative analysis, for which three pasture areas in the forest enterprises of Achy, Arstanbap, and Kyzyl-Unkur in the Bazar-Korgon district were selected. Demonstrative enclosures installed in these areas divided the grazing territory. Thus, data on vegetation cover, which specialists will collect from fenced and open territories and compare, will allow an assessment of the potential of pastures based on indicators such as recovery rate, botanical changes, and yield indicators.
Preparatory activities were planned and carried out within the framework of the Kyrgyz-German project for the conservation of nut fruit forests, implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation. PF “СAMP Alatoo” is the recipient of project subsidies.
