Determining Suitable Areas for Afforestation: Data Verification Results

From October 28 to November 15, 2024, specialists from the СAMР Alatoo PF conducted a validation of data to identify areas suitable for afforestation and reforestation in 15 forest enterprises in Kyrgyzstan. To cover all eight forest vegetation zones of the country, two forest enterprises were selected from each region.

It is worth noting that this data was obtained during research aimed at identifying areas for implementing measures to restore degraded forests and create new forest plantations. The work involved geospatial analysis, considering parameters such as elevation above sea level, slope steepness and aspect, land categories, and forest cover. According to the СAMР Alatoo PF project team, these systematically processed indicators can also be used to analyze climatic factors affecting the success of afforestation and reforestation efforts. Specialized software products such as QGIS, ArcMap, and R Studio were used in the analysis.

The results of this research were presented in October at a meeting with representatives of the Kyrgyz Forest Service, who expressed interest in the practical application of the data in the field.

During the validation process, additional information was collected in collaboration with forest enterprise staff. This included data on the need for fencing to protect against livestock and the accessibility of areas for afforestation activities. Practical analysis also covered the distribution of forest types by elevation zones and slope aspects. A critical next step will be studying soil characteristics.

The research and validation of its results were conducted under the project “Identifying Suitable Areas for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Natural Regeneration of Degraded Forests within the State Forest Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic,” implemented by СAMР Alatoo PF with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German Agency for International Cooperation).
