СAMР Alatoo Public Foundation is actively involved in the process of updating Kyrgyzstan’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). Today, our specialists participated in a national seminar discussing the results of biodiversity and ecosystem assessments, as well as the new NBSAP structure.
Aliya Ibraimova, Manager of the “Wildlife Conservation” program at СAMР Alatoo PF, took part in a panel discussion and presented the organization’s proposals for improving the strategy. These proposals are based on the organization's extensive experience and have already proven to be effective. They include: (1) integration of ecological corridors to support the migration of wild animals; (2) implementation of the “Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures” (OECM) concept, which recognizes areas that contribute to biodiversity conservation without formal protection status; (3)application of the “One Health” approach, which links the health of people, animals, and ecosystems; (4) use of international evaluation systems for protected areas, such as the "Ibex" tool; (5) сo-management of state wildlife reserves (zakazniks) with local communities where no official staff or management bodies exist; (6) a unified biodiversity database for monitoring and assessing pastures; (7)integration of the High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) concept into national land-use planning.
The NBSAP update process is led by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic (MNRETS KR) with support from UNDP. The aim is to align Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity strategy with the global Kunming-Montreal Framework for Biodiversity.
By incorporating these proposed measures, Kyrgyzstan can not only preserve its unique ecosystems but also adapt to modern conservation challenges.
