CAMP Alatoo PF participated in the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi

16 October 2025

The World Conservation Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has concluded in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where a new 20-year global conservation strategy was adopted.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Congress approved IUCN’s 20-year Strategic Vision and the Programme for the 2026–2029 period. Her Excellency Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak was re-elected as President of IUCN, alongside new Council and Commission members.

“Our mission is not an easy one, but it is essential: to bridge divides between science and policy, between climate and biodiversity, between people and the planet. Let us leave Abu Dhabi confident that what unites us is stronger than what divides us — our shared belief in the resilience of life,” said Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak.

In her closing remarks, IUCN Director General Gretel Aguilar added:

“This Congress has been a testament to the power of collaboration, teamwork, and dedication. From Abu Dhabi, we send a clear and united message — we are one Union, determined to make change happen.”

Five years before the 2030 biodiversity and climate goals, the Congress called on the global community to step up collective efforts and scale up solutions benefiting both people and nature.

During the Congress, IUCN welcomed over 100 new members, including six countries — Armenia, Tajikistan, the Marshall Islands, Gabon, Tuvalu, and Zimbabwe.

CAMP Alatoo PF presented regional initiatives from Central Asia aimed at strengthening the synergy between nature conservation, climate action, and community resilience.

The Foundation’s Director, Murat Zhumashev, took part in an online podcast session held as part of the Congress program. The session focused on the One Health approach and the role of local communities in wildlife conservation. Representatives of regional and international conservation initiatives joined the discussion, which was moderated by experts exploring practical ways to engage communities in species monitoring and zoonotic disease prevention.

In his presentation, Murat Zhumashev emphasized that One Health is an integrated approach linking the health of people, animals, and ecosystems — and that its practical implementation is only possible through strong community involvement. He shared examples from the One Health project in Kyrgyzstan, implemented by CAMP Alatoo PF in cooperation with local communities, self-governments, veterinary and medical services, highlighting joint species monitoring, early detection of zoonotic risks, and preventive measures.

He noted that community participation strengthens resilience: people living near protected areas possess traditional ecological knowledge and practices essential for sustainable management. These must be incorporated into national and regional conservation frameworks.

The podcast speakers concluded with a joint call to expand partnerships, share knowledge, and mobilize more resources to advance actions at the intersection of nature and health — emphasizing the power of collaboration, data sharing, and integrated management.
