Forest nurseries will be established in the Alay Forestry Enterprise in Osh Region and the Leilek Forestry Enterprise in Batken Region, where tree species such as thuja, juniper, pine, and birch will be cultivated.
The activities are being carried out within the framework of the project “Integrated community-based management of high value mountain ecosystems in southern Kyrgyzstan for multiple benefits”, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP. The project includes a forestry component aimed at the sustainable management and restoration of priority high-altitude forests of high conservation value. As part of this work, the СAMР Alatoo PF cooperates with ten forestry enterprises.
Planting material for the nurseries was partly procured and partly provided by the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University named after K. I. Skryabin, a long-standing and reliable partner of the Foundation. Faculty members and students of the Department of Forestry and Horticulture collected several dozen kilograms of tree seeds.
In turn, the СAMР Alatoo PF supplied the department with the necessary equipment—including shovels, hoes, rakes, pruning shears, ladders, and other tools—for use in the university nursery. The nursery grows high-quality seedlings, as well as the best plant varieties and hybrids, intended for the restoration of degraded lands and the promotion of reforestation efforts.
After testing the seeds for germination and quality, the planting material will be transferred to the Alay and Leilek forestry enterprises. The active planting phase is expected to begin in spring, subject to favorable weather conditions. At present, the forestry enterprises have already identified suitable sites and installed fencing.
