Knowledge and skills for cultivating crops under changing climate conditions and unstable weather are essential for local farmers. As part of the FAO project in Kyrgyzstan, “Active Women’s Organizations of Civil Society for Peace,” and with the support of the СAMР Alatoo PF, training sessions were conducted for farms in the Batken and Leilek districts of Batken Province, focusing on adapting crop production to climate change. Nearly 300 residents from nine rural communities participated in these sessions.
The primary objective of the training was to provide farmers with information and introduce them to technologies for growing vegetables, fruits, and berries, which would lead to an increase in their economic well-being.
Each training session began with interactive discussions on common barriers that hinder successful crop cultivation and high yields. Surveys among farmers revealed that the most common challenges include water shortages, low soil fertility, lack of knowledge about pest protection and control methods, and insufficient information on the proper use of fertilizers. Additionally, many farmers noted a lack of skills in effectively managing gardens and land plots.
Participants were introduced to innovations adapted to current climate conditions, with a focus on soil composition and plant nutrition methods. An important aspect of the training involved discussing irrigation methods and standards, as well as conducting economic analyses for the rational use of land plots.
Farmers learned about integrated pest management methods for controlling pests, diseases, and weeds. They were informed about biological protection methods and their effectiveness, and they learned to prepare botanical infusions and decoctions to combat pests using readily available plants. Recipes for botanical pesticides were provided as handouts with QR codes for easy access to information.
Special attention was given to soil analysis. With the help of a mobile laboratory, farmers could test samples of local soil and obtain information about its composition. It was found that in most cases, soil fertility was low, highlighting the need for agrochemical analysis to maintain micronutrient levels.
Participants were also introduced to the technology of direct seeding (no-till) and its significance for preserving soil structure. In some rural communities, groups of farmers formed to express interest in applying this technology to their lands.
Due to the degradation of pastures near rural areas, it was suggested to plant resilient crops, such as pistachios, almonds, and rose hips, to restore the ecosystem. Farmers were provided with information on the technologies for cultivating these plants.
To optimize water resource use, participants studied drip irrigation systems by visiting farms with established systems, where they gained practical knowledge.
The training sessions were conducted in an atmosphere of active discussion, where farmers shared their experiences and challenges. At the end of the training, the trainers—practicing agronomists—developed specific recommendations and strategies for each rural community, aimed at overcoming the identified issues, significantly increasing farmers' interest in applying new methods and technologies.
The goal of the project “Active Women’s Organizations of Civil Society for Peace” is to enhance the organizational capacity of women’s civil society organizations and create a favorable environment for their participation in strategic decision-making as a foundation for addressing climate security issues, leading to the maintenance of peace in Kyrgyzstan. As a result of this initiative, women’s organizations reduce climate-related risks at local and national levels, contributing to sustainable peace.
