Игра «Сохранение снежного барса»: от настольной игры к онлайн-формату

Game "Saving the Snow Leopard": From Board Game to Online Format

16 February 2025

The board game "Saving the Snow Leopard and Its Habitat" is now available online. The digital version was developed with the support of the project "Adaptation of Mammals to Climate Change in Central Asia" and tested by specialists from the Public Foundation "СAMР Alatoo"PF.

The idea to transition the game online arose due to the significant interest from participants in various educational events conducted by "СAMР Alatoo" PF for local communities.

The board game "Saving the Snow Leopard and Its Habitat" was created in 2018 as part of the project "Revival of Biocultural Heritage through Integrated Management of Pastures and Wildlife". It is designed for adults and high school students.

The main difference between the online and board versions lies in the interaction format. In the board game, participants physically gather, using a game board, pieces, and cards. In the online version, interaction occurs through a digital platform. Dina Maldybaeva, a project specialist at "СAMР Alatoo"PF, noted that "the game has been adapted to an online version so we can include participants from different regions".

A moderator manages the gameplay, controlling card distribution and the game's progression. This makes the game more accessible and interactive, encouraging more participants to engage in snow leopard conservation and habitat preservation.

As Salamat Dzhumabaeva, manager of the "Water Resources Management" program, stated, "the game's goal is to emphasize the need to preserve wild animals' habitats. Players act as hunters, receiving rewards for their catch. The game includes cooperation cards. Without interaction with ecosystem users such as pasture committees, local communities, tourists, and hunters, it's impossible to protect nature and its inhabitants. The winner is the one who creates a 'quiet zone', attracts the snow leopard there, and collects cooperation cards."

The game develops logical and strategic thinking, communication, and negotiation skills, and also serves educational and enlightening purposes.

Both versions of the game aim to enhance ecological literacy and foster a respectful attitude toward natural resources and wildlife. They promote understanding the importance of preserving local ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as highlighting the necessity of collaboration among various stakeholders to achieve this goal.
