In 2024, the large-scale project “Integrated Community-based Management of High-Value Mountain Ecosystems in Southern Kyrgyzstan for Multiple Benefits” was launched with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNDP. One of the implementing partners is the PF CAMP Alatoo. The project aims to protect the biodiversity of valuable mountain ecosystems and the ecosystem services they provide, while promoting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
The project addresses key threats and barriers to sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation in forest and pasture ecosystems, including key biodiversity areas within the project territory. All activities are carried out with the active involvement of local stakeholders — especially women, youth, and vulnerable groups — ensuring equal opportunities for participation.
Pasture Monitoring
In spring and summer, pasture condition assessments were conducted in several aiyl aimaks in the southern project regions.
In 8 aiyl aimaks of Osh Oblast, specialists assessed pasture vegetation using a standard method — measuring plant cover, height, presence of shrubs, bare soil, and signs of erosion. Using a “measuring stick” method and biomass collection, they calculated forage availability for livestock.
Similar monitoring was carried out in 13 aiyl aimaks in Batken and 7 in Naryn oblasts. The team analyzed pasture productivity, forage availability, and indicators of degradation, including spread of invasive or toxic weeds. The collected data was compiled into recommendations for sustainable pasture use.
In parallel, collaboration was established with local governments and municipal bodies, which will act as pasture committees.
Forest Restoration and Afforestation
In June, project experts visited pilot forest farms in Osh and Batken oblasts to discuss project goals and planned activities. Jointly with Batken, Leilek, Uch-Korgon, and Alai leskhozes (forestry enterprises) sites for reforestation and afforestation were identified. The PF CAMP Alatoo team conducted on-site assessments of the selected areas.
The project will also support the creation of nurseries in Leilek and Alai. Leskhozes(forestry enterprises) will prepare project proposals and send formal funding requests. Forest management plans will be developed for each forest enterprise, taking into account high conservation value forest areas and principles of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN).
Baseline Study on Ecotourism
Another key project direction is supporting local ecotourism initiatives. From May to July, a study was conducted in Osh, Batken, and Naryn to assess opportunities and barriers for ecotourism development, with a gender perspective.
The study included:
Review of tourism legislation and institutional framework in Kyrgyzstan
Analysis of current ecotourism initiatives
Assessment of ecological, cultural, and socio-economic resources
Surveys revealed barriers such as lack of legal knowledge, limited information, no seed funding, and language or marketing skills gaps. Respondents also noted social constraints and lack of tourism experience. The project will provide practical recommendations and support local initiatives through a small grants program.
