Sustainable management of water resources

CAMP Alatoo promotes sustainable water management by developing approaches and tools for sustainable and efficient use of water in the face of climate change. Special attention is paid to development of local water management plans that help address water conflicts, improve crop yields and enhance livelihoods. All activities are based on the principles of partnership, trust and cooperation, involving local communities, authorities and relevant institutions.

Mitigation of conflicts over natural resources aims to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts arising from competition over access to and use of natural resources, including water resources.

      Approach:

  • Establish an effective mechanism to prevent and resolve conflicts, improve resource management and ensure sustainable development.

Tools:

  • Conflict assessment and analysis: conducting research to understand the causes and consequences of conflicts related to natural resource use.
  • Development of conflict management strategies and plans: developing conflict management strategies and plans, including procedures for conflict prevention and resolution.
  • Establishment of dialogue platforms and initiative groups: organising meetings and negotiations between different organisations, districts, aiyl okmotus to resolve conflicts (a) establishment of initiative working group at district or water basin level with involvement of key institutions, stakeholders (b) discussion of inter-institutional conflicts (over territorial resources between two or more organisations, aiyl okmotus, rayons (c) development of mitigation measures and (d) their implementation.
  • Development and implementation of automated systems for rational and efficient use of water resources. It is a tool designed for efficient allocation of water resources among different water users.
  • Education and awareness campaigns: conducting training programmes to raise awareness of conflict management techniques and the importance of equitable distribution of resources.
