Adaptation to climate change

Sustainable Land Management

The objective of CAMP Alatoo is to enhance the quality of life for rural communities through the implementation of sustainable land management practices. This encompasses the mitigation of climate change, the reduction of soil erosion and the restoration of degraded pastures and forest ecosystems. Over the past two decades, the organisation has been engaged in the development and adaptation of diverse approaches and tools to achieve these goals.

CAMP Alatoo facilitates the adaptation of local communities to the impacts of climate change by introducing modifications to local natural resource management plans. The organisation regularly commissions expert analyses in the AFOLU sector (agriculture, forestry and other land uses) to prepare reports and develop adaptation measures.

         Approaches:

  • Identification of key strategies and measures to optimise national contributions in the livestock sector and pasture management in the context of the NDC of the Kyrgyz Republic.
  • Development of guidelines for integrating climate change and ecological corridors for biodiversity conservation into pasture management plans. Conducting detailed analysis of climate change impact on livestock, pastures and forest resources
  • Formulation of strategies and actions to update the National Plan to Combat Desertification in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic.
  • Development of methodologies and tools for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions in the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) sector.

    Tools:

  • Analysing the livestock and pasture sector.
  • Drawing up a pasture management plan on the territory of aiyl aimaks and on the lands of the State Forest Fund (SFF).
  • Community mapping of pastures (defining internal boundaries of pasture plots, creating a map with traditional names).
  • Constructing infrastructure facilities.
  • Unsing instruments as such GLEAMI and EXACT tools.

Developed digital tools

  • Automated web-based platform, "Electronic Zhayit Committee," for development of annual pasture use plans.
  • Mobile application “Pasture monitoring” for collecting data on condition of pastures.
  • Pasture condition database.
  • The mobile application "Electronic Shepherd" -based on the Grazing Response Index (GRI) method- supports the organisation of rotational grazing.
