Biodiversity Conservation

Sustainable Land Management

The objective of CAMP Alatoo is to enhance the quality of life for rural communities through the implementation of sustainable land management practices. This encompasses the mitigation of climate change, the reduction of soil erosion and the restoration of degraded pastures and forest ecosystems. Over the past two decades, the organisation has been engaged in the development and adaptation of diverse approaches and tools to achieve these goals.

CAMP Alatoo introduces integrated mechanisms for biodiversity conservation, drawing upon both local expertise and global best practice.

Approaches:

  • Engagement of local stakeholders in the pasture condition assessment process guarantees that local knowledge and conditions are taken into account.
  • Application of the Grazing Response Index to optimise a rotational grazing and improvement of of pasturesf grazeland.
  • Development and implementation of integrated principles for sustainable forest management, considering environmental, economic and social aspects .
  • Assessment of soil organic carbon with the objective of developing strategies that will result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and an improvement in carbon balance.
  • Implementing pilot projects with the objective of testing and evaluating new approaches that are being considered for reform of the forest sector.
  • Development of a unified methodology for monitoring the condition of pastures with the objective of ensuring consistency and accuracy of data at the national level.

Tools:

  • Learning for Sustainability training module - L4S.
  • Promoting rotational grazing according to the Grazing Response Index (GRI) methodology
  • Participatory Pasture and Grassland Assessment (PRAGA).
  • Developing community plans for pasture use and management considering the impact of grazing on biodiversity.
  • Developing maps with pasture carrying capacity
  • Conducting an assessment of forest land potential for afforestation and reforestation.
  • Enhancing reforestation through the establishment of plantations, support for public and private nurseries.
  • Integrating of hunting plans into pasture management plans of aiyl aimaks.
