Regional Assessment of the Potential for Nature-Based Solutions in Mountains of Central Asia and the Caucasus

What we are doing
Implementation Period
  • Implementation Period: 2024 - 2025
  • Donor organization: World Bank
  • Geographical location: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan
The Central Asia and Caucasus (CAC) region faces various natural hazards such as avalanches, droughts, earthquakes, forest fires, floods, landslides, and mudflows. These hazards pose risks to settlements, agricultural lands, and infrastructure in countries like Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. These risks are compounded by factors like climate change and human activities that degrade land and exploit water resources.

Project Background

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are gaining traction globally and domestically as effective measures to mitigate these hazards. Many case studies have shown their effectiveness. However, the feasibility and investment potential of NBS in the CAC region remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this project holds significant importance as it aims to evaluate the potential of Nature-Based and Hybrid Solutions in reducing various risks and identify the necessary conditions for their implementation in the countries.

Project Objectives & Goals

  • Assist the World Bank, governments and development partners in identifying opportunities for different NBS for resilience in mountainous areas of the CAC region, both in terms of policy enhancement and potential investments.
  • Raise awareness among CAC governments and other local stakeholders on the potential of NBS for mountains to enhance resilience in the region.

Project Result

  • Preliminary assessment of NbS application potential in the mountains of Central Asia conducted
  • Country analyses with policy recommendations prepared
  • StoryMap digital map developed for wide dissemination of results
