Within the framework of the project component “Environmental Education and Awareness” the CAMP Alatoo PF promoted the idea of education for sustainable development (ESD). This direction is included in the program “Education 2030” under the Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 - Quality Education. As stated in the Education for the Sustainable Development Goals: Learning Goals, achieving Goal No. 4 and the rest of the SDGs requires meeting the target of ensuring that by 2030 all learners have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development.
Within the framework of the project, 770 copies of the ESD manual were printed: 470 in Kyrgyz and 300 in Russian. Another 700 copies were published with the support of the regional program “Integrative and Climate-sensitive Land Use in Central Asia”. Electronic versions of the manual were also posted by the resource “Educational Resources of Kyrgyzstan under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic.”
Among the educators and methodologists who underwent training in the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the methodology of teaching based on the materials of the developed guidance, 6 master trainers were selected. They played a leading role in further training and professional development of their colleagues in the new educational concept throughout the republic. A total of 26 trainings were conducted in all regions of the country, training over 700 teachers and 55,000 students.
The integration of educational courses developed based on the ESD guidance into the educational system became possible through the conclusion of memorandums of cooperation with 4 educational institutions - project partners.
In parallel with training the adult professional audience, the Samr Alatoo Foundation worked to instill an understanding of the importance of ESD and skills for the sustainable use of natural resources among schoolchildren by organizing various informational and educational events for them. Students from the Bazar-Korgon and Aksy districts of Jalal-Abad region participated in the "Walnut Festival," "Park March," and the summer school "Chyrak Jangak" multiple times. About 400 high school students, teachers, representatives of the specially protected natural areas of the Bazar-Korgon and Aksy districts of Jalal-Abad region participated in these environmental events.
In November 2022, a subregional conference "Promoting Education for Sustainable Development: Regional Perspectives and Experience" was held in Bishkek jointly with UNESCO. The event was attended by 150 teachers from schools and universities in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, representatives of regional ministries of education and science, embassies of Germany in the Kyrgyz Republic and Estonia in Central Asia, UNDP, UNESCO, GIZ, civil society, and experts from Germany, Mongolia, and Thailand.
