Kyrgyzstan as a member of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which it joined in 1999, has undertaken a commitment: To expand efforts to combat desertification and land degradation. Despite certain successes of the country in following international norms, the process of land degradation and water scarcity combined with climate change and unstable weather is becoming more and more widespread.

Project Background

To achieve this result, the project pursued the following objectives: (1) raise awareness of all stakeholders on the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Kyrgyzstan, (2) transfer technologies to prevent land degradation; (3) enhance the capacity of rural communities. The project approaches included climate risk assessment, land use analysis and planning, integrated water basin management and economic efficiency.

Project Objectives & Goals

The project aimed to protect land from degradation through the establishment of nurseries using best technologies and practices.

Project Result

As a component of the project, four rural nurseries with a total area of eight hectares were established. This initiative involved the planting of coniferous and fruit trees on the designated land. Soil and water conservation technologies were applied throughout the planting and subsequent maintenance phases. The products yielded from these nurseries were then donated to various social institutions. An evaluation of the ecological, social, and economic impact of the nurseries was conducted using specifically developed assessment mechanisms.

100 specialists from the leskhozes and resource users improved their knowledge on creating green spaces through participation in 4 practical workshops on nursery care.

65 educators improved their professional skills in climate and phenology to share new information with 16,000 students.

24 mini nurseries were established on school grounds in Chui and Talas Oblasts. Potentially 16,000 students had the opportunity to expand their knowledge and practice practical skills at the mini nurseries.
