Energy efficiency

The efficient use of energy resources is very important to the whole population, especially for mountain communities.

In this focal area, CAMP Alatoo aims its activities at improving living conditions of rural people through the dissemination of energy-efficient technologies. For this, CAMP Alatoo conducts awareness-building activities in mountain communities on the following issues: existing tools and solutions for sustainable use and production of energy, facilitating a common understanding on the meaning of sustainable energy, and promoting the use of alternative energy. In addition, CAMP Alatoo helps increase the capacities of local masters by offering trainings how to apply thermal insulation technologies in houses, how to construct energy-efficient stoves, as well as promoting the institutional development of trained masters by organising them into groups. With the overarching objective being to disseminate energy-efficient technologies, it is necessary to promote access to loans to use for energy-efficient technologies and develop new, innovative energy-saving technologies and tools. All activities are aimed at enhancing cooperation and strengthening interrelations between the interested institutions.

For this purpose, the following tools are used:

  • Learning for Sustainability (L4S) training module in energy conservation. This includes: a simulation game as an introduction to the learning process; insights of renewable and non-renewable energy sources; provides insights on the types and seasonal consumption of energy; and includes discussion on construction techniques appropriate for rural areas, including traditional ones. Particular attention is paid to sustainable use of energy, house insulation technology, and energy-efficient stoves. Training is aimed at increasing public awareness on energy conservation and capacity building on energy-efficient technologies.
  • Training on thermal insulation technologies. This is both a theoretical and practical training on thermal insulation of houses for masters in rural areas. This technique allows masters to understand and test various insulation techniques in practice. Having completed the course, the masters can work independently to insulate other peoples’ houses.
  • Workshops on construction of energy-efficient stoves. This approach is aimed at training local masters on how to construct energy-efficient stoves. In the course of the training, masters gain theoretical and practical skills in stove construction. Additionally, the program includes training in marketing to attract more orders for the construction of stoves.
  • Training on construction of energy-efficient greenhouses. A year-round vegetable production technology was developed and tested in the mountain regions.
  • Capacity building on institutional development of the trained masters. The training is based on the outcomes of the research, which defined a necessity in uniting masters into a single institution. Such an approach promotes disseminating their services on use of energy-efficient technologies and getting permanent income from them.
  • Rural microcrediting for financing the application of energy-efficient technologies through establishing micro-credit agencies and cooperating with local financial institutions.

Dissemination

  • Three films on house insulation and construction of energy-efficient stoves. The films are used as teaching aids for masters.
  • A documentary film about energy conservation in rural areas.
  • Training Module L4S “Raising Awareness of Local Communities About the Possibility of Energy-Saving Technologies’ Application in Rural Homes” is regularly held in Kyrgyz villages and promotes use of the technology.
